Community

At HRCDC, community is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that strong, resilient communities are built when people feel connected, supported, and empowered to shape the place they live. Since 2021, we have been working alongside residents in Houghton Regis to foster cohesion, amplify voices, and build lasting partnerships that deliver real social value and sustainability.

Cohesion: Bringing people together

From the very beginning, we have prioritised events and activities that bring residents together, helping to build relationships and a sense of belonging. These range from local fun days and family events to community workshops and social gatherings, all designed to make Houghton Regis a place where people know their neighbours, share experiences, and celebrate community life.

Advocacy and organising: Residents’ voices heard

Inspired by Citizens UK models of community organising, we work to represent residents in key decisions that affect their lives. This includes advocacy around planning applications, school delivery, retail provision, and allotments. By supporting residents to speak up and ensuring their voices are heard at council meetings, with developers, and in other decision-making forums, we help create a more inclusive, responsive community.

Partnerships: Connecting people and organisations

Strong communities need strong networks. We facilitate partnerships between residents, housing associations, developers, local businesses, and public services, ensuring that everyone works together to deliver projects that benefit the community. These collaborations create opportunities for investment, services, and facilities that would not be possible in isolation, and ensure that social value and social sustainability are embedded in every development.

A history of community organising

The spirit of community action was formalised in July 2021 when residents of one of the new housing areas came together to form the Bidwell West Community Association. After months of work behind the scenes, the first public meeting was held on 26th January 2022 at Dunstablians Rugby Club, attended by nearly 100 residents. From that meeting, a Management Committee was appointed, which has since continued to meet regularly, responding to residents’ needs, supporting local initiatives, and hosting major community events that strengthen the area’s social fabric.
